In our daily life, we always think about our extension in this Universe. We think that we are too big and powerful in this Universe. But its not true. We are almost an atom subparticles or smaller than that if we compare ourselves to the size of Universe. Let us get into it!


This is our Earth, where we live.

This is our solar system, where our Earth is orbiting the Sun.

We all know the distance between our Earth and the moon is 384,000 km. It seems small but believe me, it is not that much small. We can fit all the planets of our solar system between Earth and the moon with 4,392 km (2,729 miles) to spare. In fact, we can fit 30 Earths between Earth and the moon. Comparing to Saturn, our Earth's diameter is about 9.5 times smaller than Saturn (Saturn diameter is 120,536 km). The surface area of Saturn is about 83 times the area of Earth and the volume of Saturn is about 764 times the volume of Earth which means that we can fit 764 Earths in it. Finally, there comes our Sun, which is 864,400 miles in diameter whereas on the other hand our Earth has diameter of about 7,953 miles which means that Sun's diameter is about 109 times the diameter of Earth. It is so large that about 1,300,000 Earth can fit inside it. This seems huge! Right? But wait, massiveness dont stop here. 


Arcturus - A star, which is 16,000 times larger in volume than our Sun. This means that we can fit (1,300,000 x 16,000) Earths in it. Its huge!

Alpha Scorpii A- This star is 690million times bigger than our Sun, so we can conclude that about (690million x 1,300,000) Earth can be fitted in it.

VY Canis Majoris- It is about 2.9 billion times bigger than our Sun. It is too huge which we can't imagine of. But still it exist in this Universe. Just think how large our Universe is.


Our solar system is  part of many solar families in which there exists  many stars and its planets which is revolving around it. This group of stars and planets is known as Galaxy. We are a part of the Milky Way Galaxy (also known as spiral galaxy). 

This galaxy is 100,000 light years, which is roughly 950,000,000,000,000,000 km. Thats insane! No. Its nothing in compare to other galaxy like IC 1011. IC 1011 is 6,000,000 light years wide. It is six times the diameter of the Milky Way galaxy. There are thousands of other galaxies present in this Universe. Coming to the distance, our Earth is 54.6 million km. So if luckily any human reach Mars in future and sends message from Mars to Earth, it will take 20 minutes to reach that message to Earth as light speed is the maximum speed that a wave can travel. Voyager 1 space probe, is the farthest man made object travelled away from the Earth. It is currently at 138 AU's away from us. AU  means the distance at which Sun is away from  Earth. Voyager 1 is travelling at 17 km/second and it will take it more than 30,000 years to cross the solar system at this speed. Dont know whether human will survive till that time. Beyond solar system, we arrive at interstellar neighbourhood. Here, we measure the time duration in light years. As we know, our closest is Proxima Centauri. But  it is not close enough. If everything will be fine, then even after travelling at a speed of 11 km/second, Voyager will reach there after 70,000 years. As calculated, if we drive a car at an constant speed of 100 km/hour, then time the car will take to reach Proxima Centauri will be equal to the 6 times the age of the Universe and by the time we will reach there Proxima Centauri wouldn't exist, as it will die. That's far our another nearest star is! Moving far away from Proxima Centauri, we will arrive at Local Group of Galaxies. Local Group of galaxies is a group of 54 different galaxies such as Milky Way, Andromeda and many others. This group of galaxies is expanded in 10 million light years. According to physocists, milky way galaxy and Andromeda galaxy will merge together in next billions of years and will be known as Milkdromeda. This local group of galaxies seems nothing if compared to Virgo Supercluster. Virgo Supercluster is a group of 100 other groups of galaxies. Virgo supercluster is expanded in 110 million light years. Observing our planet from the edge of Virgo Supercluster is impossible for us. Even if we take a telescope of radius 6400 km (which is equal to the radius of Earth). Just imagine and get goosebumps!
Another supercluster of which the Virgo supercluster is just a part of is Laniakea Supercluster. This supercluster
consists of more than 100,000 of galaxies and is expanded in about 520 million light years. The present human technology is'nt capable enough to reach out of this supercluster. After this supercluster there comes an Observable Universe. The Observable Universe have over 2,000,000,000,000 galaxies which together contains more stars than the sand particles present on the Earth. It is the maximum limit upto where we can observe. Researchers did'nt received light beyond it. The distance is too huge that even after travelling at 300,000 km/second, light had not reached us. From Earth, the radius of the Observable Universe is 46,500,000,000 light years. The Universe is expanding in the speed more than the speed of light, so it is almost impossible that we will be able to know that what is outside the observable universe. It is believed that the local group of galaxies is just 0.00000000001% of the Observable Universe. According to the theory of Cosmic Inflation proposed by Alan Guth, if it is assumed that expansion of the Universe begins at 10^-37 second after the Big Bang and assuming that the size of the Universe before expansion began is equal to its age times the speed of light, then the size of entire Universe= size of the Observable Universe x 150 sextillion. This means that we do not even exist in this Universe, considering size as the parameters! (You may suffer a little problem while understanding theory of Cosmic Inflation. But believe me, thats the easiest possible way I could have written!)
